'Assign To' Comes to Modules
This is NEW for Modules; however, the new 'Assign To' UI (user interface) will ripple throughout other elements in Canvas. Most notably, Assignments Links to an external site.; Discussions Links to an external site.; and Pages Links to an external site.
Summary: On the Modules page, instructors can assign students to an entire module and individual module items from the Modules page. Additionally, the Add Module and Edit Module Settings pages are redesigned as trays.
Notes:
- If a student is assigned only a specific item within a module and not the entire module, they will see only that item in the feature area, such as an assignment on the assignment page, and not the rest of the module.
- If a student is assigned an entire module, but only specific items within that module, students can only view the items they are assigned.
Change Benefit: This feature improves the differentiation of Modules to create a more dynamic and adaptive learning environment.

On the Modules page, instructors can also access the Assign To tab by clicking the Options icon [1]. Then, select the Assign To link [2].

When editing a module, the Edit Module Settings is redesigned to display as a tray with a Settings tab [1] and an Assign To tab [2].

Using the Assign To tab, instructors can set the module visibility to Everyone [1] or assign it to specific students [2]. In the Assign To field [3], instructors can select students or sections using the drop-down menu, typing student names, SIS IDs (if available), or section names . Lastly, click the Save button [4].

When a module is differentiated for specific students, a View Assign To link displays to easily review or edit visibility.

Note: The View Assign To link does not display if the module is assigned to everyone.

Rubrics Redesign Phase 1
Summary: The Rubrics page at the admin and course level is redesigned, allowing admin and instructors to search and sort rubrics, view the location rubrics are used, duplicate and archive rubrics, as well as more easily edit existing rubrics. Additionally, the rubrics create and edit interface is redesigned.
Change Benefit: This feature enhances educational value and improves student learning as institutions focus on effective rubric-based assessments.
Feature Workflow
At the Account and Course level, the Rubrics page is redesigned. Tabs are available to display Saved [1] and Archived [2] rubrics. A search bar [3] is available and the Create New Rubric button [4] is updated. Admins and instructors can also sort rubrics in ascending and descending order by Rubric name [5], Total Points [6], Criterion [7], and Location Used [8]. Additionally, an options icon [9] is available for each rubric, allowing users to easily edit, duplicate, archive, or delete rubrics [10].

Note: Rubrics cannot be edited or deleted once they have been added to an assignment. However, this can be duplicated for additional edits and the creation of new rubrics.
When creating a new rubric, enter a Rubric name [1] and Rating Order [2]. To add a new criterion, click the Draft New Criterion button [3]. To create criterion from an outcome, click the Create from Outcome button [4].

When creating a new criterion, enter the Criterion Name [1] and Criterion Description [2]. To enable a point range, select the Enable Range checkbox [4]. Then, determine the desired Points [4]. Rating name [5], and Rating Description [6]. Then click the Save Criterion button [7].

Once the rubric is complete, users can edit [1], delete [2], or duplicate [3] criterion. Additionally, use the drag and drop icon [4] to re-order criteria. Then, either Save as Draft [5], Save Rubric [6], or Preview Rubric [7].

Inbox Updates
Add Signature to Messages
Summary: When enabled, users have the option to configure a signature when composing a message.
Change Benefit: This feature streamlines communication and enhances the effectiveness and professional appeal of inbox messages.

In the Inbox, click the Settings button.

To create a signature, select the Signature On radio button [1] and enter the desired signature in the Signature field [2]. Then, click the Save button [3].

Once a signature is saved, it displays in the message body when composing a message.

Summary: When enabled, users have the option to set an auto-response for messages.

To create an auto-response message, select the Response On radio button [1] and enter the Start Date [2], End date [3], Subject [4] and Message [5]. Then, click the Save button [6].

Smart Search
Summary: Smart Search is a new feature preview available in Canvas using advanced AI and semantic algorithms. The Smart Search feature understands the context of queries, providing more accurate and relevant results without needing complex search operators or tools. Currently, the Smart Search feature is querying the following items within a course:
- Content pages
- Announcements
- Discussion prompts
- Assignment descriptions
Feature Workflow
To enable Smart Search, go to Settings > Navigation tab and 'Enable' Smart Search > click Save.
For more information related to the Smart Search feature, click the How it Works button.
How it Works Button
In the Smart Search field [1], enter keywords or phrases to return relevant results, then click the search icon [2], or use the enter/return key on a keyboard. Additionally, users can click the like or dislike icons [3] to provide feedback on the search results of specific items.

New Quizzes - Sub-Account Bank Sharing
Summary - This feature streamlines resource sharing and enhances the overall efficiency of item bank management.
At the course level, an Account tab [1] displays when sharing an item bank. Instructors can share with sub-accounts they are associated with [2], manage access [3] and view sub-accounts the item bank is currently shared with [4].

Additionally, the Filter By options are updated. The All Banks option is renamed Shared with me [1], a This Account filter is added [2] and the Banks Shared to Course option is renamed Shared with Courses [3] on the Item Banks page. Additionally, an Account search field displays when viewing the Institution Banks and Shared with Me filters [4] at the course and Account level.

Rich Content Editor - Find and Replace
Summary - The "Find and Replace" option available in modern productivity tools is now available in Canvas. This update allows for efficient data extraction, transformation, and manipulation.
In the Rich Content Editor, click the Tools drop-down menu [1], then select the Find and Replace link [2]. Additionally, the keyboard shortcut is command+F for Mac and control+F for Windows.

The Find and Replace modal displays and users can use the Find field [1] to enter keywords, then use the Replace with field [2] for the desired replacement. Users can use the Replace All button [3] to replace all items simultaneously or the Replace button [4] to replace a single item. If there are multiple items to replace, use the Previous [5] and Next[ [6] buttons to scroll through each individual item.

New Quizzes - Export New Quizzes Using Common Cartridge
Summary - In Settings, when creating a course export, New Quiz files are exported as XML files. Previously, New Quizzes were exported as a JSON file type.
When Importing Course Content, select the Content Type Common Cartridge 1.x Package or Canvas Course Export Package in the drop-down menu [1], then choose the .imscc file type [2].

The new search feature gets more accurate and relevant results because it understands what you mean. No more fancy search tricks like "and" or "or" to get what you're looking for. To try Smart Search out in your course, navigate to Settings > Feature Options > Smart Search > Enable. Refresh your page and verify 'Search' appears where students can view course navigation items.
What content is searched?
The Search feature is querying the following items within a course: content pages, announcements, discussion prompts and assignment descriptions. The intention is to expand this scope as the Smart Search tool continues development. Note: it is not querying "student" items, like discussion post replies.

CANVAS: Archive Grading Schemes New Quizzes Updates Product Blogs - Rubrics & Modules Smart Search BETA

Settings/Grades - Archive Gradings Schemes
Summary: At the account and course-level, the Grading Schemes page interface is redesigned. Additionally, instructors can archive grading schemes as well as edit the name and description of grading schemes currently in use.
In Course Settings, a View button [1], Copy button [2], and Add New Grading Scheme buttons [3] are added.

In Course Settings, the Manage All Grading Schemes modal is redesigned. Additionally, instructors can edit titles and descriptions of grading schemes already in use with the Edit icon [1]. Instructors can archive grading schemes using the Archive Icon [2] and restore archived grading schemes with the Unarchive icon [3].

Notes:
- A grading scheme in use can be archived and then restored to an active state.
- An archived grading scheme cannot be leveraged in the future by a course or assignment unless the scheme is restored.
- The default Canvas grading scheme cannot be archived.
- When copying or exporting a course, archived default grading schemes are not copied or exported.
Additional Details
Editing the name and description of grading schemes currently in use does not allow edits to percentages or points in the grading scheme. Additionally, a grading scheme established at the course level cannot be deleted, archived, or edited at the account level. Similarly, a grading scheme created at the account level cannot be deleted, archived, or edited at the course level.

Raw Points and Percentages on the Moderate Page
Summary: On the New Quizzes Moderate page, a configure icon is added allowing instructors to switch between percentages and raw points in the score display column.

Summary: Classic Quizzes' practice quizzes are migrated to New Quizzes with zero-point quiz settings enabled by default.
When a classic practice quiz is migrated, the New Quiz zero-point settings are enabled by default. This functionality enables instructors to swiftly and effortlessly transfer practice quizzes, eliminating the need for manual updates to each individual quiz.

Move to Simple Layout
The Spring 2024 faculty roundup newsletter mentioned that the default theme for new Qualtrics surveys would be the Simple Layout Links to an external site.. Vendor has informed us that this change is not possible for our Qualtrics brand. Flat Layout will remain the default theme for new Qualtrics surveys. Survey hosts are encouraged to use Simple Layout for surveys to ensure they meet accessibility standards and are mobile-friendly.

New Quizzes - Item Banks Shared in Course Copy
Summary: This update improves instructor workflow by automatically sharing an item bank to a copy of a course without the need to take the additional step to share the Item Bank.
Note: When a course is copied that includes a new quiz with an item bank, the item bank is shared with the new course automatically. This functionality is specific to the workflow when a course is copied. When a course is copied with the intent to migrate a Classic Quiz to a New Quiz, the item bank that is created from the question bank is already automatically shared with the new course.
Calendar - Duplicate Events for Sections
Summary: In the Calendar, users can create and edit duplicate events for different sections of a course. Note: This behavior is duplicating single events and not creating recurring events.
When creating an event, click the More Options button.

New Quizzes - Anonymous Grading
Summary: In New Quizzes, instructors can enable Anonymous Grading.
When creating or editing a New Quiz and the Anonymous Grading feature option is enabled, instructors can select the Anonymous Grading checkbox.

In the Moderate page, student quiz details are hidden when Anonymous Grading is enabled. Additionally, the Manage Current Attempt section in the individual student modal is hidden.

Calendar - Recurring Events
Summary: In the Calendar, users can create and edit recurring events.

When adding or editing an event in a calendar, users can select the frequency using the drop-down menu in the Edit Event modal.

Notes: Each frequency selection has an occurrence default. Additionally, users can have a maximum of 400 occurrences.
- daily = 365 (days in a year)
- weekly = 52 (weeks in a year)
- monthly = 12 (Months in a year)
- annually = 5 (The event will occur for five years)
- every weekdays = 52 * 5 (weeks in a year * weekdays)
When the custom option is selected, a modal displays allowing users to customize the frequency of the event.

Users can edit or update the frequency of an event on the More Options page.

Note: When a user has selected the Use a different date for each section checkbox, the frequency option is removed.
When deleting a recurring event, a modal displays where users can select which events are deleted.

Gradebook - Point Based Grading Scheme
Summary: Instructors can choose to have a point-based grading scheme when creating new schemes or editing existing schemes. Point-based grading schemes can be out of any number (ie 0-4 or 0-100), and have the same base requirements as a percentage-based grading scheme.

In Course Settings, instructors can create new grading schemes to grade by points. Additionally, when editing an existing scheme graded by percentages, instructors can change to grade by points [1]. When selected, the default point grading scheme displays. Instructors can customize the ranges by adding [2] and removing [3] rows.

In the Gradebook, when the course grading scheme is point-based, Assignment Group totals and Final Score display a tooltip of raw earned points and total points [1]. In the gradebook cell, points display scaled points as a fraction [2].

Note: When the Final Grade Override feature option is enabled and a course is using a point-based grading scheme, instructors can override the grade with a letter grade only.

Build on Last Attempt
Summary: In New Quizzes, instructors can allow students to build on their last attempt of a quiz by reattempting incorrectly answered questions.

In New Quiz Settings, select Allow multiple attempts [1], and then select the Enable build on last attempt checkbox [2].

Note: When the build on last attempt feature is enabled, students can only view questions marked with incorrect answers, all other questions are hidden.
Additional Details: Students can reattempt incorrectly answered questions until the answer is marked correct in SpeedGrader or they run out of attempts. Students who get all questions correct will not have the option to reattempt.
Improved Item Analysis Report
Summary: This update improves instructor workflow by providing Item Analysis reports in a timely manner and simplifies the user interface.
In New Quiz Reports, click the Generate Report link.

Summary: Instructors can export New Quizzes from the Build page and the new Export Page.

In the New Quizzes Build page, Instructors can export content by clicking the Options menu [1], then clicking the Export Content link [2].

Additional Details: When a question from an item bank is used and then a QTI export is created, the item bank is included in the export.
Share Item Bank with Course Checkbox Update
Summary: The Share Item Bank with Course checkbox is added in the Item Bank page when creating a new Item Bank, as well as existing Item Banks. Additionally, instructors can view when an Item Bank is already shared with a course.
A user with edit permissions can select or deselect the checkbox to share the Item Bank with a course.

When a user has view permissions only, the share checkbox is grayed out and they are unable to make any changes.

Additional Details: If an Item bank is shared with both a course and a specific user, when the item bank is unshared with the course and continues to be shared with the user, the item bank no longer displays in the Banks Shared to Course filter, and can be accessed from the All Banks filter.

This update provides instructors with a more efficient and intuitive way to organize and sort their gradebooks.
Note: Gradebook data will remain filtered until the filter is removed.
Import, Export and, Settings Buttons
The Import and Export options display as buttons [1]. Additionally, View Options are now available in Settings [2]. You can now create and save multi-level filters [3] and export the gradebook's "current view."
