Build Assessments

Instructors can use New Quizzes to build assessments with several item types that measure student competency in a variety of subjects. Assessments can be modified using various assessment settings and aligned to outcomes at the assessment or question level.
View Reports

New Quizzes includes assessment reports for admins and instructors to view student performance, including mastery of learning outcomes.
Students
View Assessment Results

Students can view their results from New Quizzes assessments. Assessment results include overall and individual questions scores. They may also include instructor feedback.
In Course Navigation, click the Quizzes link.
Add Assessment

Click the Add Quiz button.
Create New Quiz Assessment

In the Choose a Quiz Engine screen, select the New Quizzes option [1]. To save your quiz engine selection for this course, check the Remember my choice for this course checkbox [2].
Then click the Submit button [3].
Note: You can reset your quiz engine choice from the Quiz Options menu at any time.
Add Assessment Details

In the Assignment Name field [1], enter the name of your assessment. To enter assessment details, enter the total points possible [2], select the assignment group [3], and choose how the grade is displayed to students [4].
To remove this assessment from final grade calculations, click the Do not count this assignment towards the final grade checkbox [5].
Assign Assessment

In the Assign To field [1], select who will be required to take the assessment. You can assign the assessment to individual students or sections.
In the Due field [2], select the assessment due date.
In the Available from and Until fields [3], select the availability dates for the assessment.
Note: If you have set section override dates in your course, you may need to select a course section and set due and availability dates that fall within the section override dates.
Save Assessment

To save your assessment details, click the Save button.
That is it! Everything else: shuffle answers/questions, multiple attempts, restrict students from viewing, etc, will be under Settings on the Build part of New Quizzes.
Edit New Quiz in Canvas

Find the assessment you want to edit [1]. To edit the assessment, click the Options icon [2] and select the Edit option [3].
Edit Quiz Details

To edit the name of the assessment, enter the name change in the Name field [1]. To edit the due date, click the Calendar icon [2] and select the due date. To edit the point total, enter the point total in the Points field [3]. To view more options, click the More Options button [4].
View More Options

To change the format the assessment as displayed to students, click the Display Grade as drop-down menu [1] and select the option you prefer. To remove this assessment from final grade calculations, click the Do not count this assignment towards the final grade checkbox [2].
In the Assign To field [3], select who will be required to take the assessment. You can assign the assessment to individual students or sections.
In the Available fields [4], select the availability dates for the assessment.
To add a rubric to the assessment Links to an external site., click the Add Rubric button [5].
Save Changes

To save your changes, click the Save button.
Build Assessment
In the Build page, you can edit the title and description of your assessment [1], view your item banks Links to an external site. [2], align the assessment to outcomes Links to an external site. [3], preview the assessment from the student view Links to an external site. [4], and navigate the assessment [5].
You can use the Rich Content Editor Links to an external site. to format and add content to your assessment instructions.
Add Content

To add content to your assessment, click the Add button.

To insert content from an item bank, click the Item Bank button [1]. To create a new question, click the button for the question type [2] or add stimulus content Links to an external site. [3].
The following question types are available in New Quizzes:
- Categorization Links to an external site.
- Essay Links to an external site.
- File Upload Links to an external site.
- Fill in the Blank Links to an external site.
- Formula Links to an external site.
- Hot Spot Links to an external site.
- Matching Links to an external site.
- Multiple Answer Links to an external site.
- Multiple Choice Links to an external site.
- Numeric Links to an external site.
- Ordering Links to an external site.
- True or False Links to an external site.
Edit Question
For each question, you can enter a question title [1], question stem [2], and answers [3]. You may also select options specific to the question [4], align the question to an outcome Links to an external site. [5], and add the question to an item bank Links to an external site. [6].
In the Points field [7], adjust the point value for the question by entering a number or clicking the arrow buttons. To add general student feedback, click the Feedback icon [8].
To save the question, click the Done button [9].
Note: Essay questions do not include an answer field and must be graded manually.
Copy Question

To copy the question, click the Copy icon.
Notes:
- Duplicating a stimulus question type is not currently supported.
- Duplicating questions from item banks is not currently supported. However, individual questions added to a quiz from an item bank can be duplicated, but the copy will not be added to the item bank.
Open Question Navigator

To open the Question Navigator and view your assessment, click the Expand icon.
View Question Navigator

In the Question Navigator, you can view each question number [1], question type [2], point total [3], question stem [4], and total question points [5].

To view a question in the assessment, click the question stem [1]. You will be taken to the question within the assessment.
To manually reorder questions, click and hold the Move icon [2]. Drag the question to where you want it to display in the assessment.

Open Settings

Click the Settings tab.
View Warning Message

If students have already submitted the assessment, a warning message will appear on the Delivery Settings page.
Shuffle Questions

To shuffle the order questions are displayed to students, click the Shuffle Questions button. If this setting is turned off, questions will display in the order you designate in the assessment.
Note: Item bank questions that have been added in a group will continue to be randomized within that group whether this setting is turned on or off.
Shuffle Answers
To shuffle the order answers are displayed to students for multiple choice, multiple answer, and matching quiz questions, click the Shuffle Answers button. If this setting is turned off, answers will display in the order you designate in the quiz questions.
Note: Shuffling answers does not guarantee the order is displayed differently to every student. Some students will receive the same answer order, depending on the number of answers for each question.
Display One Question at a Time
To display one question at a time to students, click the One Question at A Time button. To allow students to backtrack to previous questions in an assessment, click the Allow Backtracking checkbox. Allow Backtracking is enabled by default.
Require Student Access Code
To require students to enter an access code to take an assessment, click the Require a student access code button. Then enter the access code in the Password field. To view a masked access code, click the Show access code checkbox.
Set Time Limit
To set a time limit for an assessment, click the Time Limit button. Then enter the time limit using the Hours and Minutes fields.
Filter IP Addresses
To filter IP addresses for the assessment, click the Filter IP Addresses button. Then enter the allowed IP ranges using the Allowed IP range fields. To add multiple IP ranges, click the Add Allowed range link.
Allow On-Screen Calculator
To enable an on-screen calculator for the entire assessment, click the Allow Calculator button. Select either the Basic or Scientific calculator option. The Basic calculator only displays numbers and basic mathematical functions (add, subtract, multiply, divide). The Scientific calculator displays more options for advanced calculations. You also have the ability to allow an on-screen calculator on a question-by-question basis.
Allow Multiple Attempts
To allow multiple attempts for an assessment, click the Allow multiple attempts button [1]. To assign which score to keep for student grades, select the option in the Score to keep drop-down menu [2]. You can choose to keep the highest score, latest score, or average score.
Set Limited Attempts
By default, students will be allowed unlimited attempts when the Allow multiple attempts option is enabled. To set a limited number of attempts, select the Limited option [1]. Then select the number of attempts you want to allow [2].
Hide Student Results

To restrict students from viewing assessment results Links to an external site., click the Restrict student result view button.
Note: Students can still see their assessment grades in the Gradebook when the Restrict student result view option is enabled. To completely hide grades from students, you will need to enable a Manual posting policy Links to an external site. in the Gradebook.
Moderate Assessment

Click the Moderate tab.
View Moderation Page
The Moderation Page displays a list of students in the course [1], their assessment attempts [2], the score for each attempt [3], the time for each attempt [4], attempt logs [5], and assessment accommodations [6].
To moderate an assessment for an individual student Links to an external site., click the Moderate button [7]. Moderation options include managing timer settings and reopening a student's most recent attempt Links to an external site..
Filter Results

To search for a specific student, type their name in the Search field [1]. To filter displayed results by all attempts, no attempts left, attempts left, submitted attempts, or attempts where autograding failed, click the Sort by drop-down menu [2].

Moderate Attempt
Moderation settings apply only to the assessment you are moderating and include reopening assessment attempts and managing timer settings. Find the student you want to moderate. Then click the Moderate button.
Reopen Assessment

To reopen the student's most recent assessment attempt, click the Reopen button.
Accept Message

A warning message will display to inform you that the student can resume their assessment attempt from its previous position [1]. To accept and reopen the assessment, click the Reopen button [2].
Manage Attempts

The Moderate panel displays the number of allowed attempts per the assessment settings [1].
To give the student additional attempts for the assessment, type a number or use the arrow buttons in the Additional Attempts field [2].
Adjust Timer Settings

To adjust the timer settings for the student, select an option in the Time adjustments menu.
Add Additional Time

To add additional time to the assessment attempt, select the Give additional time option [1]. Then select the amount of time [2]. Time units can be set to minutes or hours.
Remove Time Limit

To remove the time limit from the attempt, select the Remove time limit (unlimited) option.
View Timer Adjustments
View the moderation timer settings in the Accommodations column. This column displays the cumulative effect of course-level accommodations and moderation timer settings.
Set Course Accommodations
Accommodation settings include adding or removing time for all assessment attempts, and multiplying time limits by a set multiplier.
Select Time Adjustment

In the Time adjustments menu, select the time adjustment option you want to give the student.
Give Additional Time

To add additional time, select the Give additional time option in the time adjustments menu [1]. Then use the Hours and Minutes fields [2] to add additional time.
Remove Time Limit

To remove the time limit, select the Remove Time Limit (unlimited) option in the time adjustments menu.
Add Time Limit Multiplier

To add a time limit multipler, select the Time limit multiplier option in the time adjustments menu [1]. Then enter the multiplier in the Time limit multiplier field [2].
Save Accommodations

Click the Save button.
Grade Assessment
You can grade New Quizzes assessments using SpeedGrader. Most assessment items are graded automatically after a student submits the assessment. However, essay and file upload questions must be graded manually.
You can access SpeedGrader from the Gradebook. In Course Navigation, click the Grades link.
Open SpeedGrader

To open SpeedGrader, hover over the assignment column header and click the Options icon [1]. Then click the SpeedGrader link [2].
View SpeedGrader
View the assessment in SpeedGrader [1]. When grading assessments, you can use the SpeedGrader menu options [2], change students [3], change submissions [4], and leave assignment comments [5]. Learn how to use SpeedGrader Links to an external site..
View Questions That Need Review

If any questions require manual grading, the Results page displays a warning message that lists the questions to review. Essay and file upload questions must be graded manually.
View Results

Assessment results include the percentage score [1], point score [2], and time to complete attempt [3].
Grade Item

Items the require manual grading display a gray border [1].
To give a student full points for an answer, click the Checkmark button [2]. To give a student no points for an answer, click the X button [3]. You can also use the Arrow buttons to increase or decrease the score [4].
Regrade Assessment
You can regrade a question for an assessment in New Quizzes. Regrading allows you to change the correct answer or point value for a question. The point value can also be changed for individual answers for questions with varied point values.
Regrading only applies to completed submissions. If all students will be affected by the regrade, please wait for all submissions before regrading.
Regrading is not available for Essay or File Upload questions. Only point values can be changed for Categorization questions; correct answers cannot be changed for this question type.
Navigate back to SpeedGrader to regrade the question.
Change Correct Answer
To change the correct answer for a question, select the correct answer for the question.
Note: This step shows how to regrade a Multiple Choice question. The steps to change a correct answer will vary based on the question type.
Change Point Value
To customize the point value for the question, type the point value in the Points field [1].
If the question varies points by answer, the point total can be changed in the Points field for each question [2].
Click Regrade Button

Click the Regrade button.
Select Regrade Option

Select how to apply the regrade from the following options:
- Award full points for correct answers only [1]
- Award full points for current and previous correct answers [2]
- Award full points for all submitted answers [3]
- Award full points to all students [4]
To save your choice and regrade the question, click the Regrade button [5].
Note: Awarding full points for correct answers only may reduce some students' scores.
View Question Regrade
Once the questions has been regraded, you can view the original score [1] and the regrade score [2].
Migrate Classic Quiz to New Quiz

To migrate a quiz, click the Options icon [1]. Then click the Migrate option [2].
Note: If you cannot view the Migrate option, it has not been enabled for your course. Go to Settings > Feature Options > enable New Quizzes.
Open Quiz

Once migrated, the quiz displays a New Quiz icon [1]. To open your quiz, click the name of the quiz [2].
Note: By default, migrated quizzes are unpublished.
Import QTI Package in New Quizzes
If you need to export quiz content from your course, you can export quiz content as a QTI ZIP file.
Create a New Quiz
- In Course Navigation, click the Quizzes link.
- Click the Add Quiz button.
- In the Choose a Quiz Engine screen, select the New Quizzes option. Then click the Submit button.
- Edit the details for your assessment Links to an external site..
- When you are finished, click the Save button.
Import Content

Your assessment will open to the Build page [1]. To import content, click the Options icon [2] and select the Import Content option [3].
Import QTI File

To import a QTI file, drag and drop the file [1] or select a file by clicking the Browse button [2].
To start the import, click the Import button [3].
View Import Status

A status bar will display the status of your import.

View your imported assessment.
Migrate Question Banks to Item Banks
This may require a few steps:
Create a new Classic Quiz (+Quiz) with an obvious "Question Bank" name (i.e., Color Theory Pre-test Question Bank)
Find and Select All or the appropriate number of questions from your Question Bank (do NOT link!)
Save Classic Quiz
Under Settings > Export > Quiz > select this new Classic Quiz only
Download the QTI file to your computer
In Course Navigation, click the Item Banks link. Create a fresh, new bank by clicking +Bank. Select the new bank and click the Options icon (three dots). Select Import Content.
Drag and drop file or Browse to select QTI file and then click Import.
