Cross-listing Sections [Combining Courses in Canvas]

Only the Instructor of Record as designated by the Registrar's Office may merge (cross-list) their courses. However, sections with multiple instructors may be merged by adding the instructor of the primary section as a Teacher to each of the secondary sections.

Merging courses requires that one section become the primary section, which will host all the content and assignments for all your combined sections/courses. The secondary sections will plug into that primary section, but as the instructor you will still be able to administer individual sections.

What the Instructor Can Expect...

  • Will only see primary section in Canvas
  • Can filter out individual sections in the gradebook
  • Can assign TAs as graders for specific sections only
  • Can designate different assignment due dates for individual sections
  • Can configure student groups to be created within sections

What Students Can Expect...

  • Students will see the primary section only (even if they are registered for a different section) Note: students will always remain in their original sections behind-the-scenes.
  • Seamless integration between original section and primary section

Step 3: Select Secondary Course(s)/Section(s)

You can select whether or not to Isolate sections (1).

What are isolated sections?

When the 'Isolate sections' checkbox is checked, students in a section will only be allowed to communicate or view other students in the same section. This prevents cross-listings from violating the Federal Education Rights Privacy Act (FERPA).

If two classes share the same meeting time and place, this checkbox may safely be left un-checked.

Under the selected primary section (gold box), check the box of the section(s) that you wish to merge (2). Then click Save Changes (3).

You should see a "Successful" banner above the 'Select the primary course' section (1). Review your request to make sure that you have selected the correct primary course (2) and the correct secondary course(s) or section(s). Merged sections will appear in Canvas immediately.
