Copying Videos from Older Courses

Canvas instructors can copy video content from an older course to a new course using either Panopto Course Copy or batch copying of select videos manually. Please reference the flow chart below for help on deciding which option is right for you.

Panopto Course Copy

If you want to transfer ALL videos and folders from an old course to a new course, the best path would be using manual Course Copy in Panopto. Panopto Course Copy will update all viewing permissions and embedded links in your content to suit your new course.

1. Go to the Panopto Video section of your course in Canvas

2. Click on the Settings cog in the top right of your library

3. In the Overview section of the Settings video, scroll down to Course Video Copy and click Choose Source Folder.

  • Note that you can choose to omit transfer of Zoom videos created from the Zoom integration or scheduled recordings made in Panopto Lecture Capture enabled classrooms to prevent copying content with student identities to new courses.
  • Panopto may suggest a previous course, but it is recommended to double check you are copying the correct content.

4. In the search box, select the previous course folder by name. You can copy paste the folder name or folder ID, and predictive search will list the available options.

5. Once you have your source selected, click Begin Folder Copy. This process may take up to 48 hours depending on the amount of content in your folder.

IMPORTANT - Course Copy will copy ALL videos over at the same time, and they will follow the visibility permissions in your new course. Please make sure that if you have content you don't want students to see at the start of the semester that you follow Step 3 in the Panopto in Canvas guide for manual video publishing. You can also delete videos from the new course if they are unneeded.

Batch Copy

If you only need a few videos, the recommended path is to batch copy videos.

1. Open the original course from which you want to copy videos, and go to the Panopto Video section

2. Click the Arrow icon on the top right to Open in Panopto. This will open the course in the Panopto portal from which you can perform batch copies.
