NameCoach - Record the Pronunciation of Your Name

Students and Instructors can voice-record their names and set up their NameCoach profile once in Canvas. Instructors, GRAs/TAs, and students, can access recordings and profiles seamlessly across Canvas courses. Easy-to-learn audio name pronunciations in the Canvas courses you use every day, to promote inclusion, belonging, and rapport in every interaction.

NOTE FOR FACULTY: If you do not see NameCoach in the course navigation, go to Settings > Navigation > look under Disabled Apps > locate 'NameCoach' and select the three dots to Enable, then Save. 

 

Access NameCoach

Two ways to access NameCoach in Canvas

From your Canvas 'Account'

From any Canvas course navigation
Select 'Account' from the burnt orange global navigation bar [1] and select 'NameCoach' from the pop-out window [2]. Select 'Courses' from the burnt orange global navigation bar [1] and select 'NameCoach' from the course navigation menu [2].

To record your name in any Canvas course, follow the steps below:

    1. Click on the Record button next to your name
    2. Select "Phone or Web Recorder" to record your name

 

Web Recording:

    1. Click the "Record" button and wait for the prompt before speaking
    2. You can stop the recording, then click, "Submit and Finish"
    3. After you submit, you are able to hear your recording and re-record if you would like

Note: We have received reports of issues using Safari. Please try Chrome or Firefox to record your name.

 

Phone Recording:

    1. Enter your phone number in the box provided, then click "Submit and Finish"
    2. NameCoach will call your phone and will prompt you with instructions. You will be able to listen to your recording and re-record if you wish
    3. After you complete the call, go back to the NameCoach page in Canvas and click, "Submit and Finish" to save your recording

Note: NameCoach does not save the phone number entered. It is simply required to make a call back for the purpose of recording over the phone.

 

Listen to the audio recordings

Both faculty and students can review the audio recordings for pronunciation by following these instructions in a Canvas course:

  1. Click on NameCoach in the Canvas course navigation menu
  2. Click on the purple play button to the right of the persons name
