How do I use the Qualtrics integration in Canvas

Qualtrics is a robust survey tool available for all UT faculty, staff and students. The Qualtrics LTI integration allows you to create a survey or quiz in Qualtrics and offer it to your students through Canvas as a graded activity. Once a student completes the survey, a completion score or performance score will be passed back to the Canvas gradebook.
Please use the guides below for more information on how to install the integration and set it up in Canvas and Qualtrics.
How do I attach a Qualtrics survey to a course using this tool?
Before continuing the steps below, make sure you have created at least one survey in Qualtrics.
Once you are ready to begin, open your course in Canvas.
- To add as an Assignment, click the blue '+Assignment' button in the upper-right of the page.
- Under 'Submission Type', choose 'External Tool' [1] and select 'Find' to locate 'Qualtrics Grade Passback' [2]
- Select 'Qualtrics Grade Passback' [1]. Canvas will auto-fill the External Tool URL [2]. Make sure the 'Load This Tool in a New Tab' box is checked [3]. Note: If you are creating surveys for multiple courses/sections at the same time, it is essential to load Qualtrics in a new tab. Click the 'Select' button [4] when finished.
- Complete the remaining fields as you would for any other Canvas assignment. When finished, click Save or Save & Publish.
- Open the assignment and click to load in a new browser window [1].
- On the Configuration page, enter the anonymous link
Links to an external site. from Qualtrics [1], edit the introduction text to students [2], edit the "end of survey" text students will see [3] and click 'Save' [4]. Once students have responded, you can view their scores under 'Responses' [5].
Once a student completes the survey, a completion (participation) score or performance (grade) score will be passed back to the Canvas gradebook.
If you want a participation score (where every student gets 100%),
- Edit your survey and click 'Survey Flow' from the left menu [1]. Click 'Add a New Element Here' below your block of questions [2].
- Click the 'End of Survey' button [1].
- Click 'Customize' [1].
- On the Customize End of Survey pop-up, make sure 'Override Survey Options' is checked [1].
Select 'Redirect to a URL' and enter ${e://Field/return_url}?Score=100&MaxScore=100 [2].
Click 'OK' to exit pop-up [3]. - When finished, in the lower right corner, click 'Apply' [1].
If you want to calculate a grade in Qualtrics,*
- Set up a Scoring category in Qualtrics Links to an external site. and score your questions.
- Edit your survey and click 'Survey Flow'.
- Click 'Add a New Element Here' [1]
- Choose an 'Embedded Data' element.
- When asked for an 'Embedded Data Field Name', enter score [1]. You may need to clear out text and enter 'score' (no quotes).
Click 'Set a Value Now' [2]. - Under Custom Value, select 'Insert Piped Text' > 'Scoring' and select your scoring category.
- Still in the 'Survey Flow' screen, click 'Add a New Element Here' [#4 above].
Click "End of Survey' [1], then Customize [2] - Check 'Override Survey Options [1] and select 'Redirect to a URL' [2].
For the URL, enter ${e://Field/return_url}?Score=${e://Field/score}&MaxScore=100 - Click 'OK' to exit Customize End of Survey window.
- Click 'Save Flow' when finished.
*The above assumes that a perfect score is 100 points. If your survey is different, change the '100' on the end of the URL to your maximum possible score.
