Preparing the Canvas Gradebook for Final Grade Submission involves only 4 steps:

  1. Make sure there is a numeric score for every assignment, even if that numeric score is a 0
    • Leave no dashes!
    • Excuse an assignment for a student
  2. Post all Hidden Grades
  3. Remove any assignments that you're not using this semester
    • Exclude an assignment from the course's final grades
  4. Activate Final Letter Grade in Total Column
  5. Submit final grades!

Converting All Ungraded Assignments to a 0 (or some other score)

When submitting grades from Canvas, all ungraded items (dashes) will automatically be counted as zeros. This could significantly change the final totals from what you and/or your students see in Grades.

It's recommended that you enter zeros for students who do not turn in their work throughout the semester. This way, the running total for their final grade is accurate throughout the semester and they don't develop any unrealistic expectations about their final grade.

To actually change ungraded assignments (dashes) to 0s, you will need to do the following.

Click on the three dots and select "Set Default Grade"

Set Default Grade pop-up window

Enter 0 in the grade value field [1] and click [3] Set Default Grade. Skip Step #2 - you don't want to overwrite your hard work!

Enter Default Grade pop-up window

Excuse an Assignment for a Student

As needed, you can use the Gradebook to excuse a student from a graded assignment, discussion, or quiz. You can also excuse a student from a group assignment. Excused assignments are not calculated as part of a student's total grade.

In the Gradebook cell, type EX. Then press the Enter key. Alternatively, you can click the Grade Detail Tray icon [1] and type EX in the Grade field [2] or select "Excused" from the Status buttons [3]. You can leave a Comment to the student which will also appear in SpeedGrader.

Removing Assignments You Are Not Using

You can either unpublish, delete or exclude any assignment you are not going to use and/or do not want to contribute toward final grade calculation.

To unpublish, open the Assignments page in your course and click on the green circle with a checkmark. The circle will turn gray with a slash.  Now it is unpublished and removed from gradebook calculations. Note: you will not be able to unpublish assignments with student submissions.

Unpublish assignment

To delete the assignment, click on the Options icon next to the circle and select "Delete." Note: this will delete any student submissions and feedback you have added.

On the Assignment Index page, from the three dots, you can select to 'Delete' an assignment

To exclude an assignment from the course's final grades, "Edit" the assignment details as shown below. Note: this feature allows you to provide feedback without the assignment counting toward Gradebook calculations. Like other checkboxes, it can be toggled on and off.

Create/Edit assignment - check the box to 'Not count points towards final grade'

Click the Do not count this assignment toward the final grade checkbox above to remove points (i.e., 100) from final gradebook calculations.
