Adding a TA
This tutorial can apply to adding anyone in any role to your course.*
The University creates Canvas user accounts for all Current and Future Faculty, Staff and Students. All current students and faculty are automatically enrolled in to their courses by the Registrar's Office. If you get an error message when trying to add someone, please make sure you are adding them by their UT EID and that it is correct. If you continue to receive an error message, please contact Canvas@utlists.utexas.edu.

Adding Official GRAs/TAs via CLIPs
The Classroom Information Pages Links to an external site. or CLIPs is a set of online services that help faculty and assistants manage classes. Useful information found in CLIPs includes: Official class rosters, Photo Rosters, Waitlists and the ability to Authorize assistants for CLIPs/Grade submission and Canvas.
*Official GRAs/TAs should be added via CLIPs and will appear in Canvas within 6-8hrs. Adding your official GRA/TA via CLIPs ensures that they are included in the end of semester Course Evaluation Survey.
Once you have logged into CLIPs, select a course unique number to begin.
- In the left navigation menu, click 'Authorize Assistants'
- Enter your TA's UT EID. Click 'EID Search Page' to look up your assistant's EID.
- Authorize your TA to access CLIPs and/or Grades.
- If you have added your TA via CLIPs and need to remove them, select 'Remove Authorizations'
- When finished, click 'Update Authorizations'
Adding Designers, Observers, Auditors via +People
Open People

In Course Navigation, click the People link.
Add People

Click the Add People button.
Select User Search
To add a user, you can search for users with one of two options: email address or UT EID. To select a search option, click the button for your preferred search method.
Note: If you are copying and pasting user information from a spreadsheet, you do not have to filter out information that does not apply to your search option. For instance, if you copy in a line with an email address and UT EID and select the UT EID search option, Canvas will disregard the email address and only search for users with the entered EID.
Add by UT EID (preferred)
To add a user by UT EID, select the UT EID button [1]. This is the preferred method as users may have more than one email address, but they should only have one UT EID.
In the text field [2], enter the UT EID for the user. You can copy and paste multiple EIDs at one time by placing a comma or line break between EIDs.
Select User Details

In the Role drop-down menu [1], assign the user(s) a role for the course based on available course roles.^
In the Section drop-down menu [2], assign the user(s) a section in the course. If you want to add the same person to different sections, you can enroll them in one section and then add them to additional sections later Links to an external site..
If you want to limit the user(s) to only interact with other users Links to an external site. in their section, click the Can interact... checkbox [3].
Click the Next button [4].
Note: If you are adding multiple users at the same time, all users inherit the same role and section.
^Standard roles other than Teachers and Students, include Teaching Assistants (TAs), Designers, Graders, Auditors, and Observers. More information about non-instructor roles below.
Confirm Active Users

If Canvas finds an active user, you can confirm the user before adding the user to the course [1]. The user's name displays in the page along with the user's information you used in the search.
When you are ready, click the Add Users button [2].
If Canvas did not find your intended user, you can click the Start Over button [3].
Error Message

If Canvas is not able to find a match for the user(s), Canvas will notify you that a match was not found. To try a new search, click the Back button.
To grant non-UT affiliated users access to Canvas, please email Canvas@utlists.utexas.edu their UT EID(s) and Dates access is needed (e.g., "long semester").
Note: When an enrollment is manually added to the course, Canvas generates a course invitation once the course is published. The user must accept the course invitation to participate in the course. Until the user accepts the course invitation, the user's status will display as pending. Observers are not sent a course invitation.
Non-Instructor Roles in Canvas
- TAs provide course support and have all of the same permissions granted to instructors. *CLIPs is the preferred way to authorize TAs to access Canvas.
- Designers can add/edit/delete course content, discussions, announcements, assignments, quizzes, and other content filled features. They cannot see students or student submissions/grades.
- Graders can view/edit graded assessments (assignments, discussions, and quizzes), send conversation messages, add/edit/delete rubrics and view/edit grades
- Auditors can view course content, submit Assignments/Quizzes, and interact with external tools such as Lectures Online. They cannot create or post to Discussions.
- Observers can only view course content. They cannot participate in Discussions or submit Assignments/Quizzes. Athletic advisors are typically added as Observers.
