Hello Everyone!

This course is near and dear to me. I am a visual scholar, having written three books devoted to the way images are made, used, and discussed in media. I taught a “lighter” version of this course in my very first semester at UT, and I occasionally teach a PhD version of it for graduate students.

I am fascinated by the way images are like fire and water. They are like fire in that they are powerful and can do great good and great harm. They are like water in that they change according to their context. Their power and changeability require special handling, and extra layer of ethical care when they are used in media.

I hope that by the time we finished this course together that you will be as fascinated, excited and inspired by visual theory as I am.

We will meet in person on Mondays and Wednesdays, 1-2, DMC 3.204. On Fridays, we will meet on Zoom in breakout teams -- each of you will only meet on Fridays about five times.

Drop-in student hours (no appointment necessary) are in my office, DMC 3.360: Mondays, 2-3 Tuesdays, 103
