The goal of this assignment is to write a summary of your interview that will enable others to feel like they listened to highlights of the conversation, as well. To achieve this, you will need to listen to/watch the recording of your interview at least 2 times, listening carefully and taking notes. Then, write a paper 3 to 4 pages in length (double-spaced) in which you:
- Give the first name of the person you interviewed and how you connected with them
- Identify their job title and where they work. This can be a general category such as 'restaurant' or 'hospital.' Also include the city and country where they live.
- Summarize in a short paragraph (4 - 5 sentences) how they describe the AI-based or automated system they use as part of their job
- If you interviewed them in a language other than English, identify the language.
In the main section of your write-up, do your best to summarize the most important things they told you. As you listen to the recording of your interview, take detailed notes on:
- What did they talk about the most?
- What seemed to be most important to them?
- Were they surprised by any of your questions? How did they react?
- How do they seem to feel about the system they use at work? Does it make them happy? Angry? Frustrated? Relieved? Tired? Something else?
- Do they have any historical perspective on the system they use? Did they used to do their job without it? What did they say about that?
In writing up an interview, it's good to use a mix of paraphrase and direct quotes. Direct quotes are citing someone word-for-word, and are best used when they said something in an interesting way that's hard to rephrase or summarize. For example:
Adam expressed a mix of emotions regarding the hand-held device he works with. He thinks it makes his job easier and faster most of the time, because it points out the best routes to take and alerts him to traffic issues. However, there are times when he is frustrated by it. "Sometimes it feels like this little thing I'm holding in my hand is the boss. I'm, like, carrying my own boss."
If your interview was not in English, you may include the direct quote in the language your subject spoke in, and then give an approximate translation into English.
We will share highlights of many of the interviews in class during the week before the Thanksgiving holiday break. I (Tina) will contact you if I would like to share clips of your interview recording with the class.
Please post any questions about this assignment to Piazza so that all may benefit from the answers.
