Designing A Program

Landscape Taiko Iwa header

Many faculty-led study abroad programs are short-term, occurring during the period after Commencement (May Term) or during the Summer sessions (Summer I, Summer Whole, or Summer II). Programs may also be semester-long. Time abroad might range from 3 weeks to several months, and academic credit will vary depending on the curriculum and the amount of time abroad. Please keep in mind that 2023 will probably be a transitional year as departments plan their programs due to the academic calendar change. Some steps are flexible at the departmental level such as application deadline, and deposit deadline.

Program Types

Faculty-led: This would be a program with a UT professor teaching a UT course or courses, typically during May Term or one of the Summer sessions.

Affiliate: This would be a department working with a third party provider to have a member of a local university or institution abroad teach a course or courses.

Hybrid: This would be a UT faculty teaching one course and a have a member of a local university or institution abroad teach the other course.

Timelines

Planning typically begins a year in advance and the type of program your department wants to offer will influence the steps and timeline to develop the program.
