Panopto Made Easy

Welcome to Panopto Made Easy!

It consists of three series' of Modules containing video and text tutorials, depending upon what your role is at UT. Much, if not all of this material can be adapted for use by other higher education institutions who use Panopto. You can also find this course on Canvas Commons!

What is Panopto?

  • Panopto is a video platform that provides recording, screencasting, video streaming, and video content management to all faculty, staff, and students at UT. Its multifunctional features allows dual screen-recording with presentation programs such as Powerpoint, Keynote, Google Slides, and simultaneous multiple-input recordings of your desktop and self.
  • Panopto easily integrates with learning management systems like Canvas and allows you to create new material or upload existing content to its platform. It offers many features including captions, searchable text, indexed table of contents, and searchable text that are all automatically generated and can be managed in the content-management system.
  • Panopto also integrates with Zoom to allow you to store your Zoom videos in a content management system, and also provides  you with the ability to edit your Zoom videos, and easily repurpose them for other classes.
  • Panopto is similar to YouTube but for education. There are no ads and you control your video’s privacy.

If you're using Panopto with Canvas, we recommend logging into Canvas to access the Panopto Video Folder.

What can Panopto do for you?

For UT Faculty Members, Panopto provides a video content creation and management system that integrates with Canvas and the Canvas gradebook.  You can easily create videos for your courses, or upload videos from a wide variety of sources to use in your teaching. It's like YouTube for education without advertising, and you, the faculty member can control who views your videos. You can also store and edit your Zoom videos in Panopto.

For UT Staff Members, Panopto provides a video content management system accessed by using your UT EID and password.  You can create videos to support your job functions, upload existing videos, and watch them in an accessible, searchable format, in multiple languages if need be. Video is captured using Firefox or Chrome, or your mobile phone, and you do not have to have admin access to your computer to capture video using Panopto.

For UT Students, Panopto provides a safe place for you to upload video assignments in your courses, and is available to all faculty at UT.  Faculty can setup an Assignments folder where students have access to all of the Panopto tools that faculty have, and you can upload a video that only your instructor can see, or the instructor can choose to allow the class to see each other's work. Students have used Panopto for video assignments, recorded presentations, and final projects.

Who are you?

Selecting your role will lead you to a catalog of corresponding tutorial videos for using Panopto:

If you do not qualify for any of the roles listed above but have access to Panopto via your institution, we ask that you understand that this resource has been created as generic as possible to serve each role at UT. Each of our groups accesses Panopto in a different way, but once you have been authenticated via your institution, our Panopto should work exactly the same. You are more than welcome to use this material following the guidelines for Open Educational Resources (OER).
