Using software tools for rapid prototyping

The faster we can create visual representations (i.e. prototypes) of the system, the faster we can have rich feedback from the client.  The more functionality and and fidelity we put into the prototype, the better experience for the client.  We also have to balance how much time we send on creating prototypes since they are not the end goal so to strike a balance between speed and functionality, we recommend using tools like Balsamiq or Axure RP.

Balsamiq

Balasamiq provide pre-built, draggable components that allow you to build all sorts of apps quickly.  You can also add links between components to provide clickable functionality. Balsamiq purposely looks like a pencil sketch and using comic sans because the goal is to focus on the page structure and experience, rather than the UI.  If you want to use this in your project, you can download a student trial for Balsamiq online.

Axure RP

Axure is a more complex tool that allows for even more functionality, notations and comments, and much of UI styling. If you want to using this please email your professors for a license and key.
