Responding to a Medical Emergency 

    1. Seek appropriate medical care
    2. Call On Call International 24/7 at +1-978-651-9722 for guidance
    3. Notify UT of your location and status by calling the 24/7 emergency phone at +1-512-669-8488
    4. Maintain communication with On Call (Global Risk and Safety will facilitate communications with UT officials and student’s emergency contact, if appropriate)
    5. Protect the student’s right to medical privacy
    6. Complete an incident report Links to an external site.

For non-emergency medical care, students should be prepared to pay for the cost of treatment. Upon return to the US they should submit receipts for reimbursement. Questions about the claims process should be directed to grs@austin.utexas.edu.

 

Responding to a General Emergency

  1. Get students to a safe location. Shelter in place if needed
  2. Contact or respond to directions from local authorities

  4. Notify UT of your location and status by calling the 24/7 emergency phone at +1-512-669-8488
  5. Wait for further instructions from UT
  6. Communicate UT instructions/information to students
  7. Maintain communication with On Call (Global Risk and Safety will facilitate communications with UT officials and student’s emergency contact, if appropriate)

When to call the emergency phone

  • Call the emergency phone if there has been a(n)…
    • Hospitalization
    • Arrest
    • Burglary/robbery
    • Assault (physical or sexual)
    • Any Title IX violation
    • Any other “newsworthy” event involving UT students

For non-emergency health and safety incidents (such as needing to visit a clinic because of an upset stomach, or if a student has been pickpocketed), take appropriate action to resolve the situation and complete an incident report. Incident Reporting

If a faculty member sends or accompanies students abroad, they have incident reporting responsibilities for informing the Global Risk and Safety office of any health and/or safety incidents that occur abroad.
