I work towards an inclusive classroom by offering multiple ways for students to engage with the course content. For example, a recent course included scholarly texts and articles, blogs, videos, in-class lecture and active learning strategies, observation in community locations, and on-line and in-class discussion. I differentiate my course materials in an effort to support a range of learning preferences and styles. I extend this thinking to my in-class explorations. I use active and creative approaches in my classroom. We explore multiple ways for students to make meaning and to demonstrate their learning. For example, I might ask a group to represent their research process using a large piece of yarn, or to make a frozen picture with their body of a relationship, concept, or argument from a text. I find, embodied, active explorations require students to think critically and creatively about how to represent their ideas and how to interpret the ideas of others. When students’ thinking is made visible I can easily build on their understanding or correct misunderstandings when they arise.
