UT Snapshot: The Story of Medicine
Janet Walkow

She was one of the first people to rethink how long a MOOC could be based on what she wanted her students to know and be able to do. After running the 8-week MOOC once, she realized that she had two unique audiences that were interested in two different parts of the course. As a result, she broke the course down into two short courses of 4 weeks each. Each course can be taken independently of the other but those who take both have a broader view of medicine and drug development process [Developing New Drug Products and How to be a Savvy Consumer].
In developing the course, Janet and her team were looking for new ways to engage students in the drug development process. They opted for a Choose Your Own Adventure [CYA] game built with Articulate Storyline (Links to an external site.) that allows students to choose a disease they want to tackle, the therapeutic approach and then follow the drug development path through pre-clinical trials. According to Janet, "It was a success and students were unanimous in their comments, 'There needs to be more!' We are in the process of redesigning Take Your Medicine which will include gaming elements with each model of the HOW DRUGS ARE DEVELOPED stream."
