  • Due No Due Date
  • Points 100
  • Submitting a file upload

Complete this assignment by hand, using pencil (or pen) and paper. Use a camera or scanner to digitize your handwritten work (see further instructions below).

This assignment is worth 100 points.

1) Take the following arguments and list the premises in an order that makes the most sense, and write both premises and conclusion in the form of separate declarative sentences. Indicator words may be eliminated once premises and conclusion have been appropriately labeled.

a) Airport congestion could be alleviated if federal regulations would allow airports to levy higher takeoff and landing fees for peak-hour travel. That would spread flights evenly throughout the day, making more effective use of existing capacity. The higher fees could then be used to build new capacity. In this case, less [federal] regulation is the answer. —Staff editorial, New York Times, June 11, 1990

b) The cooking methods we prefer are steaming and the so-called waterless method, where vegetables actually cook in their own juices. In both these methods, steam fills the space in the pan around the vegetables, so that oxygen can’t rob them of vitamins. Since the vegetables aren’t standing in water, the water-soluble B vitamins and minerals stay put. The small amount of liquid left after cooking vegetables by the waterless method should be kept and added to your vegetable stock supply.
—Laurel’s Kitchen (p. 179)

2) Using the traditional square of opposition, determine the truth value of the following statements if the statement All professors are great teachers is false.

a) Some professors are great teachers.

b) No professors are great teachers.

c) Some professors are not great teachers.

3) Construct a Venn diagram for each of the following propositions:

a) All professors are writers.

b) No professors are writers.

c) Some professors are writers.

d) Some professors are not writers.

4) Use conversion, obversion, and contraposition to determine whether the following arguments are valid or invalid. Whether or not they are valid, state which operation was used. For those arguments that are invalid, name the fallacy.

a) No horsemen are persons who take horses for granted. Therefore, all horsemen are persons who do not take horses for granted.

b) Some musical people are literate people. Therefore, some illiterate people are unmusical people.

c) No swans are mammals. Therefore, no mammals are swans.

d) Some bankers are not honest persons. Therefore, some honest persons are not bankers.
